South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, along with other South Korean platforms, has suspended trading with Cambodia's Huione Guarantee. Huione Guarantee is a platform linked to transnational criminal networks, and regulatory authorities are intensifying efforts to review money laundering risks. Data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) of South Korea shows that the cryptocurrency transfer volume between South Korean exchanges and Huione Guarantee surged by 1400 times in 2024, reaching $8.9 million, prompting all five major South Korean exchanges including Upbit, Bithumb, and Coinone to halt trading with this Cambodian company. Previously, the U.S. and UK governments sanctioned Huione Group, the parent company of Huione Guarantee, accusing it of money laundering related to fraud, cybercrime, and human trafficking activities.
